Cruddy eyesQ: Hi i have a 6 year old cocker spaniel. in the last week or two, when i come home from work, she seems to have mucus around the edges of her eyes..or along the bottom. it comes out easily with a piece of kleenex, and doesn't seem to bother her, but i am concerned that this is some kind of infection. does this sound like a problem, or just a natural occurance ? thanks A: Many cocker spaniels are prone to various eye issues from simple allergies to conditions where their eyes dont produce enough tears to more serious diseases like glaucoma. i always recommend clients have eye exam at vet if they are concerned. you can see article i wrote on education part of this site for additional supportive measures.
HelpQ: My dog started dragging his bum across my carpet and licking all the time he has had his glands removed, our vet said it was an allergy to the carpet but i know it is not that, then we went through changing his diet,it was not that, what could this be,now he is also licking his paws constantly,to the point of waking us at night with the sound of licking,he also now has cuts and welts in between his paws,it is costing us a fortune "trying stuff out" and the vet keeps telling us to come back, and billing us for the visit. he also gets this rash every year at this time. if it helps he is a pure bred lab..help us A: Likely either inhalent seasonal allergies and/or food allergies. sometimes both present. ask vet about prescription diet low allergy diet known as purina ha which has had good success with food allergies or hills ultra z/d. also ask about blood or skin allergy testing to get to bottom of inhalent allergies so vaccines can be made up. new drug known as atopica effective but expensive
Ear mitesQ: I would like too know if there is any ear mite medicine in a pill formula. my dog gets very violent and try's to bite you. he will not even let you lift his ear. A: There is no pill formula i am aware of.
HeartwormsQ: I have a dalmation that is coughing unusually rough. i called the vet. and she said that it is not recommended to give oral medication to prevent/rid heartworms unless the dog is first tested to see if he indeed has heartworms. she said that giving the dog a medication for heartworms when the dog has not been tested positive for heartworms could cause the animal to suffer a heart attack and die. question #1: is it truly necessary to give the dog a test(ie. a blood test, for example) to see if it tests positive for heartworms before before giving any heartworm medication? question #2: if it is true that the dog must first be tested for heartworms, does petmeds sell a test kit that can be ordered w/o a prescription? please list name and approx price. A: In answer to your first question, the answer is not clear-cut as some veterinarians do not test annually. it really depends on client compliance with the regular administration of heartworm prevention, and also the type of climate and incidence of heartworm disease in your area. we do not sell heartworm test kits in part because each veterinarian would want to do their own testing for assurance.
