Rottweiler's and rawhidesQ: I used to give my dog c.e.t. for large dogs to my rottweiler from the age of 4 months until 15 months. i mentioned this to my vet who had commented on how great her teeth looked during an exam. she ended up with masticular myositis, choked on the rawhide (she was 110 lbs at 15 mos). now i am looking for a new treat besides the pepperoni (made with venison and elk by an outfit in utah) to keep her teeth clean. she will not let me touch her mouth to brush her teeth with the c.e.t toothpaste and i don't know if the c.e.t. chews were the cause of the masticular myositis. (she also has a very bad overbite). i need to give her a reward for a hard days work (she has her canine good citizen akc title and is in training as a therapy dog). her favorite treat was the rawhide which she would chew for an hour. A: I would try small raw baby carrots which are excellent reward treats and great for teeth

Multiple dogsQ: I have three dogs. in the past, i have applied a topical and one of my boxers was intoxicated by it because he licked one of the other dogs. what should i do? the oral medication doesn't cover as much as the others. thank you, maria conley A: You should keep him separated from the other dogs after application. perhaps if you applied it at night and then kept them apart by the next day it should be dry.
Is it arthritis?Q: I have a 1 1/2 yr old pitt bull, very tame and loves my 2 girls ages 6 and 8. she is our lovable lap dog. for over 3 months she has been favoring one leg (found nothing wrong with leg or paw) and has a hard time getting up from a laying position and walking. it is very expensive to take her to a vet because they need to do xrays and blood work. please help. i need a medication that is not a prescription unless you can prescribe it to her and we order it online through pet meds. A: Only things i can recommend are supplements which may help like cosequin or super joint enhancer. also pick up extra antioxidant nutrients at health food store like vitamin e at 400iu daily as well as vitamin c in form of ester c at 1000 mg twice daily. also consider proanthocyanidins from health food store at 1 mg per pound twice daily and you could try white willow bark from health food store which is what aspirin is derived from.

Flea, tick and wormer combinationQ: I have in the past given my dog a chewable pill from a vet that is to control fleas, ticks and worms. i can't remember the name of the product but i think it was through advantage. could you tell me if there is still such a product or a newer product available now with the same effectiveness. it worked very well. and also, is it necessary to give it to her all year long or just during the summer months? A: Program is an over the counter oral treatment for fleas. it kills flea eggs and larvae and stops flea development.|
